The best-known advanced learner's dictionaries are

• Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary, first published in 1948
• Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, first published in 1978
• Collins Cobuild English Dictionary, first published in 1987
• Cambridge International Dictionary of English, first published in 1995
• Macmillan English Dictionary for Advanced Learners, first published in 2002
• Merriam-Webster Advanced Learner's English Dictionary, first published in 2008

 

Longman is strongly targeted at learners of English; it has a focus on contemporary English, and has examples showing words in context. Also it has many words

Cambridge has a similar focus on learning but not as many as Longman , words it has

Oxford is a very reliable 'straight' dictionary. It's a historical dictionary (i.e. while it includes new words, it doesn't remove obsolete ones) so tends to be very good on obscure stuff, but a little slow on catching up with contemporary usage
